Yes. Scott Walker. That’s How It Works.
So there was a recent election for a Supreme Court seat in Wisconsin (that’s how they do it there, by election) that would have been a shoo-in for the conservative judge under any normal circumstances. But Walker’s over-reaching, union-busting brand of republicanism has proven to be spectacularly unpopular in very short order, so this election mobilized a lot more effort in opposition to any Walker-approved anything and the more liberal judge came out of nowhere to win. (It is close enough for a mandatory recount.)
…Walker downplayed the significance of Tuesday’s elections on Wednesday, saying they were skewed by exceptional turnout in the liberal cities of Madison and Milwaukee…
Um. Dude. Yes. That’s sort of the point. That’s how elections work. The ones who vote the most win them.
Shorter Scott Walker, “They wouldn’t have won that election if they didn’t get so many people to vote for them.”
But the sentiment he’s expressing is a common one; in his world-view, votes from less-conservative areas somehow don’t count as much, as those people and places are not real America. It is a meme that has been internalized so much that they forget it falls apart when you actually issue a statement with it as the underlying idea. This is part of the “Real America” vs. “Liberal America” fallacy that gets thrown around in Right Wing echo chamber.
Edit, late breaking news: Oh boy. They “found” a missing 7,000+ votes for the conservative to change the race. On the personal spreadsheet of a republican appointee who was granted immunity in the caucus scandal. That wasn’t attached to or overseen by any official election review. You know, for “safety.” This may be on the up and up; stranger things have happened. But holy shit, does it smell fishy.
